Miami Beach Police Arrest Artist Romero Britto For DUI

Miami Beach police arrested Brazilian born artist Romero Britto on Thursday morning and charged him with DUI. According to police, Britto was driving his Bentley southbound on Washington Avenue at about 3am and was swerving between lanes. Miami Beach police spokeswoman, Detective Jenny Velazquez, stated that Britto's blood alcohol level was about twice the legal limit, although she declined to release his specific blood alcohol results. Romero posted a $1,000 cash bond to secure his release from jail pending his criminal case.

Britto has been described as a neo-pop artist, painter, sculptor, and serigrapher. His work is very contemporary and is a combination of cubism, graffiti, and pop art. He currently resides in Miami, Florida, and has two art galleries, one on Lincoln Road in South Beach and the other in the Midtown Miami.

Britto's pending DUI criminal case is just another in a long line of celebrity DUIs in the Miami and South Florida area. Most recently, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donté Stallworth was involved in a fatal automobile accident that many believe will soon become a DUI manslaughter case. As reported by Miami Criminal Lawyer Blog a few days ago, sources have reported that Stallworth's blood alcohol level was above the legal limit, but the Miami Beach police have neither confirmed this report nor made an arrest.

In Florida, a DUI case, assuming no prior DUI convictions, is a 1st degree misdemeanor and is punishable by up to six months in jail or up to a year of probation, plus fines, court costs, community service hours, and other penalties. DUI is a very specialized area of the law. If you have a DUI case and are looking for a Miami-Dade criminal defense lawyer, make sure you find a criminal defense law firm like Pensky & Kim that has extensive DUI experience.
