Miami DUI Attorney Update: Donte Stallworth Apologizes Again
In a stunning turn of events (not really), Cleveland Browns wide receiver, Donte Stallworth, 28, recently made another public apology to the family of Mario Reyes, 59, the man that the he killed while driving drunk in Miami Beach this past March. In case you don't remember this incident, please refer to some of our previous posts for more detail: Miami DUI case 3/17/2009, Miami-Dade DUI case 3/20/2009, and Miami Beach DUI case 4/3/2009.
In his most recent apology, Stallworth stated that he feels that his DUI case has done "irreparable harm" to Reyes and his family. Ya think? Of course you've done "irreparable harm" to Reyes and his family! After all, death is the ultimate in "irreparable harm."
So why bring this up now? After all, Stallworth pled guilty to this case months ago after negotiating a sweet plea deal. He was given just 30 days in jail (24 days with credit for time served and gain time) followed by 2 years of community control and a long term of probation. So for those of you who still believe that money (and celebrity) can't help you buy your way out of trouble, please consider that many people arrested for DUI in Miami, Broward, or elsewhere in Florida end up with more than 30 days in jail... even when they don't kill someone!
Well, the timing behind this apology is easily explained. Even though his criminal case is closed, Stallworth still faces discipline by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. As of right now, Stallworth is still suspended indefinitely, but he recently met with Goodell to discuss the possibility of reinstatement... and decision which could translate into millions of dollars for Stallworth down the line. If reinstated, Stallworth promised to conduct himself "in a manner that more accurately reflects who I am and meets the high standard expected of all NFL players." At this point, it is unclear what the NFL is going to do. Stallworth, however, has stated that he will accept whatever decision is handed down by Goodell and the league.
