Dania Condo Resident Charged With Arson
Joseph Creasy, 23, was charged on April 30 with setting four separate fires in the trash chute of his condominium complex at 501 E. Dania Beach Boulevard.
While there was smoke damage, the most unfortunate impact of these fires was it caused the residents of the condominium complex to live in fear.
Investigators were able to identify Creasy as the perpetrator by coordinating the time of the fires with his schedule. Creasy admitted to setting the fires because he was depressed. He started the fires by lighting objects on fire and throwing them down the trash chute.
In Florida, arson can be classified as a first or second-degree felony. The crime involves the act of intentionally setting a fire or explosion in a structure or dwelling. Often this crime is committed in combination with another crime, such as insurance fraud, or even destroying evidence. Any amount of damage that results from the fire qualifies as arson. The perpetrator does not have to possess specific intent to damage the structure. Penalties for arson can include lengthy prison sentences, heavy fines and probation.
