Davie Man Charged with Hate Crime

John William Koontz was arrested on April 26, and is being held without bail after an altercation outside a CVS store located in the 5200 block of Southwest 34th street in Davie.

Koontz was arrested when he approached Miguel “Angel” Rodriguez, 46, outside a CVS store and repeatedly punched, kicked him, and shouted insults.

Koontz had approached Rodriguez as he was entering the pharmacy, and made an anti-gay remark. Koontz then proceeded to hit Rodriguez in the face. When he fell to the ground, he continued to punch and kick him. Rodriguez used pepper spray on Koontz, but to no avail. Two CVS employees broke up the fight and called police.

Koontz was arrested and booked at Broward County Jail, where the police found a small key in his pocket. He was charged with obstructing justice through the unlawful possession of a concealed handcuff key, which is a third degree felony. He was also charged with aggravated battery, a hate crime, and violating probation.

In Florida, obstruction of justice is a term that is used to refer to an unlawful act that hinders, obstructs or delays law enforcement. While the charge is commonly seen when someone resists arrest, it can arise from many different circumstances. Other types of obstruction of justice offenses can include resisting arrest, being in contempt of court, and aiding and abetting a crime, as well as many others.
